The
USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center
at
the University of Southern
California is one of 35 centers in a national network mandated
by the National Cancer Act of 1971. In these comprehensive cancer
centers, multidisciplinary teams of physicians and research scientists
work together to win the fight against cancer.
The
USC/Norris Cancer
Hospital, which opened in April 1983 on the USC Health Sciences
Campus, is headquartered at the Norris. The Norris Hospital, a wholly
owned subsidiary of USC, is one of only eight hospitals in the country
built exclusively for cancer research and patient care.
The
USC/Norris is a tertiary facility - a referral hospital for patients
who can best benefit from the special knowledge and skill of USC
oncologists in a setting devoted entirely to cancer treatment and
research. The Norris is home to more than 100 specialists in laboratory
and clinical sciences; other Norris personnel work in buildings
on the Health Sciences Campus, on USC's University Park campus,
and in other locations around the city. Five floors of the Norris
are devoted to in-patient and ambulatory care, five to basic research
laboratories, two to preventive medicine, one each for pathology,
physicians and Norris administration.
The
USC/Norris is distinguished by its medical staff of specialists
from many fields who define the best possible treatment for a given
cancer - treatments not commonly available except at one of the
nation's comprehensive cancer centers. USC/Norris physicians all
hold teaching positions in the USC School of Medicine; they treat
all cancers except those of children, with particular expertise
in cancers of the genitourinary system (bladder, prostate, kidney
and testis),central nervous system, female reproductive system,
breast, lung and gastrointestinal tract, and in melanoma, leukemia,
lymphomas and AIDS. Pediatric cancers are treated at Children's
Hospital Los Angeles, a component of the USC/Norris.
